koraku en - the most beautiful garden in japan

.
the japanese have nominated three gardens as the most beautiful in their country, and we went out of our way to see all three. for me (but not for g!), the most beautiful of these was koraku-en in okayama. bagged by some as just a lawn garden, i found that my sense of aesthetic had finally found a place to quench its thirst and call home. here are a few shots of those yummy, yummy lawns.

this final shot is of a rest house that was the definition of zen. a stream with scattered boulders ran through the middle of a low-roofed, open wooden structure. lying on the smooth wooden floorboards, one was surrounded by the sound of birds, insects, flowing water and the rumble of a distant storm. farther afield were those lush, manicured lawns that lulled you into a sense of deep calm. i felt like doing yoga there every morning for the rest of my life!
